Coorg – the Scotland of India

Many of us know Coorg as the Scotland of India. Exquisite natural beauty and great weather throughout the year make this little hill station in Karnataka, a very desirable destination. And a paradise for wellness seekers.

Surrounded by the Western Ghats, Coorg has lush forests, rumbling waterfalls and flourishing coffee plantations. Head to Mangalore and drive down to Coorg, which is only 135 kilometers from there. Small towns on the way like Virajpet, Pollibetta and Somwarpet offer beautiful views along with home stays that make your trips infinitely memorable.

The Heritage of Coorg

Not just a haven for mature lovers, Coorg also is much sought after for those who like to explore cultures. This district is home to the ‘Kodavas’, an ethnic lingual tribe, considered to be the descendants of people who settled in the Indus Valley during the Mohenjo-Daro period. They are Kshatriyas and hence worship their weapons, speak the Kodavas language and practice agriculture.

What to do, when you find yourself in Coorg? You could go trekking if you are there between October to March, as these are the best months for this adventure activity or you could take the beaten route of sightseeing and shopping. A good option is to visit Abbey Falls, a spectacular sight of water falling down a cliff in the midst of verdant greenery. Coffee and spice plantations around the Abbey Falls, add to its magical aura.

The roaring Cauvery River finds itself originating from a tank fed by a spring, believed to be built by Kodavas. Tala Cauvery is located on the Brahmagiri hill. Temple of Goddess Kaveriamma, next to the tank attracts hordes of pilgrims and tourists who bathe in the waters on special days. The misty natural beauty of the area covered with trees, resounding temple bells and the musical flow of the river make Talacauvery a very attractive tourist spot in Coorg.

The Namdroling Monastery or the Golden temple, as it is popularly called is the largest school of Tibetan Buddhism. Lying 34 kilometers from Coorg, it is a bamboo temple gifted to the exiled Tibetans by the Indian government. The temple has astonishing, 40 feet high statues of Guru Padmasambhava, Buddha Sakyamuni and Amityaus. The daily prayers by monks, a hospital and green lawns are some of the special features of the monastery.
